SAF-fest-1.jpg

Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) has announced Genealogies in the Middle East and Latin America, an online screening programme featuring 21 artists and collectives from the Middle East and Latin America working in film and video.

Taking place from June 1 to July 11, the project explores historical and contemporary relationships between artists in the two regions in order to consider their shared histories of colonisation and the close links developed through several cycles of migration over the last 150 years from nations such as Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq to countries in Central America, Peru, Chile, Mexico as well as Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela.

The impact of this shared history on their respective cultures, although the circumstances varied historically and regionally, is reflected in the transnational territorial subjectivities of many of the participating artists and their work.

Jointly organised by Sharjah Art Foundation and curator Anna Goetz, the project was initiated to reflect on different spheres of influence that have shaped artists in the two regions over the years. The project’s initiator, Goetz, invited the artists to ponder over what has influenced their thinking and ways of working. What were the immediate and specific societal relations, the everyday living and working conditions and the central sources of inspiration that have shaped them and their practice?

The films will be screened via the Foundation’s virtual screening platform. Over 21 days, the online screening programme Genealogies in the Middle East and Latin America will release 21 short and feature-length experimental and documentary videos.

Each moving-image work will be available for 21 days.

Following the format of a chain letter, artists were invited to nominate other artists with a work of theirs. Thus, the programme’s threads unfold along narratives revealed by the artists’ personal accounts, which provide critical alternative perspectives and insights.

LFP-1.jpg

Last Floor Productions (LFP), an Arab production company, founded by three young artists and entrepreneurs, has partnered with Shahid for the production of two series as well as with Apple in India to produce its launch films, while it is currently working with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to produce films for the Jameel Prize.

The production startup was founded in 2019 with a focus on the creation of character-driven genre fiction. The aim is to create stories from and about the Arabs and Arab world that are compelling to a new generation of viewers inside and outside the region. Accordingly, they have created LFP to be the home of scriptwriters, producers, musicians and filmmakers.

They not only produce films and television, but emphasize intellectual property creation through high-quality screenwriting.

The works of LFP allow viewers to explore a wide spectrum of social, cultural and personal issues that are often only treated through the lens of niche high-brow cinema or mass-market soaps, leaving an enormous market gap for quality, accessible entertainment. With this approach, the team at LFP is always on the lookout for new opportunities to take Arab culture worldwide, with the aim of training and hiring young talent that has similar goals and aspirations.

Ultrix-Carbonite-1.jpg

Ross has launched Ultrix Carbonite, an integrated solution based on the Software-Defined Production Engine (SPDE) initially used for Ultrix Acuity.

Ultrix Carbonite combines the routing and processing capabilities of Ultrix with the creative capabilities of Carbonite, a mid-sized production switcher.

Combining the routing platform with the production switcher shrinks the number of inter-rack failure points and reduces maintenance requirements. In this way, Ross believes that significant CapEx and OpEx savings can be achieved over the life of the solution.

Ultrix Carbonite adapts to different signal formats or mixed or changing connectivity schemes. Any of the three available Ultrix I/O cards (SDI, IP or SFP) can be installed in the available slots and mixed as required.

Each SDPE can be installed in either a Ultrix FR2 or FR5 frame and provides up to two banks of Carbonite M/E and MiniMEs. This means that a 2RU chassis and a 1RU redundant power supply rack can provide a multi-M/E production switcher and routing platform compatible with HD and UHD streams. Ross remarks that this solution, designed for smaller technical installations or OB vans, eliminates the need for audio processing, frame sync and MultiViewer hardware required in traditional system designs.

Similarly, Ultrix Carbonite allows the installation of multiple SDPE blades, configured as Carbonite switchers, in a single FR5 rack, providing the opportunity to produce in HD and 4K UHD formats simultaneously.

Nigel Spratling, VP of Switchers at Ross, said: “I’m delighted that we are now able to add Carbonite to the new SDPE blade installed in a Ultrix platform. The combination of Ultrix and Carbonite brings together the best of Ross innovation with an incredibly powerful feature set, directly addressing customer requirements for greater efficiency and improved value. This really is a powerhouse solution and I know our customers are going to get enormous benefit from it.”

Trustcomm-2.jpg

OneWeb, the UK-headquartered Low Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband operator, has announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Texas-based TrustComm Inc., which will enable OneWeb to offer its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) network and connectivity services to the US government clients and TrustComm customers.

TrustComm was established in 1999 as a provider of managed satellite communications and professional services to commercial organisations and governments. TrustComm offers services ranging from broadband Internet access, VoIP and voice, video conferencing and data communications for business continuity to emergency response, tactical field deployment, and temporary use.

Commenting on the agreement, Dylan Browne, OneWeb’s Head of Government Services, said: “OneWeb’s acquisition of TrustComm underpins our strategy to rapidly scale satellite communications service to the US Department of Defense and other government agencies as they look to integrate high throughput, low latency solutions to meet new connectivity demands. We are excited to have TrustComm join our team and leverage their strong reputation providing the remote communications our customers want, particularly in Alaska and the Arctic.”

Under the terms of the agreement, a newly acquired proxy subsidiary of OneWeb will be led by TrustComm CEO Bob Roe and focus on introducing OneWeb’s enterprise-grade network services to customers. The terms of the transaction are confidential, and it is expected to close in 2021.

Bob Roe, CEO of TrustComm, added: “The TrustComm team is thrilled to be joining OneWeb at the dawn of this new era of Satcom services. TrustComm’s heritage and customer-focused support teams will enable us to expand the portfolio of services we offer and allow us to pursue new opportunities. This is an exciting development and we look forward to taking our government business to new heights in the coming year.”

OneWeb will offer DoD and other government clients a new suite of services with network speeds up to 195 Mbps, lower latency, smaller and more compact multi-orbit user terminals and built-in network management tools providing substantial economic savings over traditional GEO sales models.

The acquisition follows the demonstration of OneWeb’s turnkey satellite-based communications system to the DoD in March of 2021, with data rates up to 500Mbps at latency levels as low as 32ms.

Telecom-Egypt-2.jpg

Telecom Egypt has selected Juniper Networks to upgrade and deploy a network capacity expansion across its national infrastructure, serving a customer base of 9.8m for fixed-line services, 6.9m for broadband and 7.3m for mobile. This move is in line with the exponential growth of bandwidth demand and service quality expectations faced by Telecom Egypt, coupled with its ongoing pursuit of a root-and-branch digital transformation programme as a key element of the Egyptian Government’s Digital Egypt and ICT 2030 initiatives.

Juniper’s latest deployment for Telecom Egypt is to invest in a customisable, automated high-performance network that can scale up and scale out with assured service experience in step with exponential growth and future demands. The deployment is an automated, flexible infrastructure that collects, analyses, interprets and responds to real-time data reporting its own health status and traffic patterns. As a result, Telecom Egypt will operate more efficiently and cost-effectively, while delivering a better user experience for its business and residential customers alike.

To meet Egypt’s bandwidth capacity requirements, the network will be equipped with 400G interfaces from Juniper’s purpose-built IP transport portfolio using custom silicon to deliver high density, reliable data throughput and low cost-per-bit. This will be complemented by Juniper’s standards-based automation portfolio that delivers an operational experience along with an end-user experience. Together, the 400G routing portfolio and the automation portfolio deliver the ability for Telecom Egypt to drive its digital transformation strategy based on its performance and user experience.

Juniper’s HealthBot, an automated, open and programmable network diagnosis tool, will also be deployed by Telecom Egypt. HealthBot provides end-to-end operational intelligence, translating real-time analytics into actionable insights.

The entire deployment uses Junos OS, a unified operating system across each solution. This approach delivers operational simplicity for Telecom Egypt, while remaining fully open and programmable.

Commenting on the development, Mohamed Alfowey, Chief Technology Officer, Telecom Egypt, said: “Telecom Egypt believes that the ability to respond to rapidly-changing customer needs is a key competitive differentiator, so improved infrastructure agility is key. A faster, more resilient and predictable network, in the context of remote working trends and skyrocketing demand for cloud-driven, 5G-ready, data-rich applications and services, enables Telecom Egypt to deliver this and meet SLAs, while controlling operational cost and complexity. We believe that Juniper’s innovations in cloud routing and network automation help us overcome this challenge now and for the long term, enabling us to deliver an exceptional end-user experience.”

Raj Yavatkar, Chief Technology Officer, Juniper Networks, added: “The challenge faced by Telecom Egypt is shared by many service providers globally – how to run their network ever ‘hotter’ and faster while meeting customer SLAs and maintaining predictability and resilience, yet controlling operational cost and complexity. Juniper believes that our innovations in cloud routing and network automation help to overcome this challenge now and for the long term. Telecom Egypt is investing in a dynamic, customisable high-performing automated infrastructure that is able to scale upward and outward in step with exponential growth and future demands.”
