PlayBox_Neo_AirBox-1.jpg

PlayBox Neo has announced the completion of a broadcast playout system for the Evangelical TV channel in Nigeria. The system was chosen and integrated by E&E Solutions which operates from administrative headquarters in Abuja.

Commenting on the development, Dileep Meyyappan, CEO of E&E Solutions, said: “PlayBox Neo’s channel-in-a-box approach proved ideal for this project. Compact, reliable and easy to operate, it is configured with all the facilities required for channel branding, content scheduling, storage and fully automated transmission. The entire playout process is handled within a 3 RU AirBox Neo-20 server including 6 terabytes of RAID-protected storage, TitleBox Neo-20 graphics management software and a SafeBox Neo-20 content replication module. As well as being operator friendly, PlayBox Neo-20 servers are straightforward to install and integrate with third-party production and distribution equipment. PlayBox Neo-20 systems are also highly scalable as extra channels are easily accommodated if or when needed. Additional CIAB modules can be integrated relatively quickly or supplemented at very short notice by Cloud2TV running as on-premises software or cloud Software as a Service.”

He added: “Flexibility is vital in any automated playout system. AirBox Neo-20 allows channel managers to change the file order almost up to the point of transmission or switch to fully live broadcasting if required to handle an urgent story. Future-proofing was a further reason for recommending PlayBox Neo. AirBox Neo-20 supports multiple playout resolutions, giving broadcasters the freedom to transmit whatever combination of SD, HD and 4K UHD is most appropriate to their current transmission strategy. Customers also have the option of subscribing to latest-generation software updates, adding extra refinements during the lifetime of each system.”

Pavlin Rahnev, CEO of PlayBox Neo, commented: “We are very pleased to be partnering with E&E Solutions in this project. AirBox Neo-20 continues to be an aspirational choice for broadcasters throughout the world and for system integrators commissioned to create new-start-up channels or to upgrade existing facilities.”

kuwait-cinescape-1.jpg

Kuwait-based cinema Cinescape has announced that it will reopen during the Eid al-Fitr, in coordination with the Ministry of Health after being closed for around 15 months.

The cinema management said only those who had been vaccinated against Covid-19 – first dose or both – would be allowed entry, in compliance with the social distancing rules as per the MOH guidelines.

The authorities had closed down cinemas, theatres, wedding halls and meeting rooms at hotels last year in May aimed at preventing the spread of the new coronavirus in the country.

Shubbak-fest-1.jpg

Ten years after the Arab Spring Shubbak, London’s biennial festival of contemporary Arab culture, returns to the city for its sixth edition, with a programme packed with Arab art, film, music, theatre, dance and literature. The 2021 edition of the Shubbak Festival: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture will run from June 20 – July 17, 2021.

Virtually all the work in the festival is brand-new – commissioned or conceived especially for this year’s conditions. In a year when international work has been in short supply, Shubbak welcomes performers from Palestine, Berlin and Lebanon.

Eckhard Thiemann, Shubbak’s Artistic Director, said: “Shubbak 2021 celebrates the creativity and voices of Arab artists and takes you right into the heart of cultural expression in the Arab world and its diaspora. With a wide range of performance venues in London and an extensive network of international locations from Slemani to Casablanca, from Cairo to Riyadh, this year’s festival programme transcends the borders of all our previous editions. The festival is a place of discovery, meetings, calls to action as well as contemplation. As our world opens up again post-pandemic, Shubbak offers opportunities to reconnect, share and explore our new local and global realities.”

Venues for 2021 include Chelsea Physic Garden, Barbican, British Museum, Toynbee Studios, King’s Place, the Jazz Café and Mosaic Rooms, while the digital programme will feature a theatre premiere performed by Syrian actors in Germany, events live-streamed globally from Beirut, Gaza, Marrakech, Slemani, Riyadh, Khartoum and Doha, a film introducing the burgeoning hip hop scene in the Gulf, dance from Ramallah and four DJ/VJ artists sharing sets from Casablanca, Tunis, Cairo and Algiers.

For 2021 Shubbak has partnered with other UK organisations, including Glasgow-based Dardishi, an organisation that showcases Arab and North African women’s contributions to contemporary art and culture, and also with the SAFAR Film Festival, the only festival in the UK dedicated to cinema from the Arab world. SAFAR will put on a special hybrid edition of its festival at Shubbak, with its curated selection of films mirroring ten years of Arab Spring, both on the big screen and at home.

Shadia El Dardiry, Chair of the Shubbak Board of Trustees (Solicitor, Bates Wells Braithwaite), added: “Coinciding with its 10th anniversary, Shubbak 2021 is both the culmination of 10 years of artistic innovation as well as a brave and inspiring response to a radically disruptive year that has forced artists and curators to think of new ways of collaborating, creating and presenting art. While the festival will retain its roots and a physical presence in London it will, for the first time in its history, be open to a global audience through a series of online and international initiatives. I am incredibly excited for this year’s festival, and proud of the team and artists that have worked so hard to bring it to life.”

Shubbak is working with its venue partners to ensure all social distancing measures are met and that relevant risk assessments have been done. It will be operating under up-to-date government guidelines on all physical events.

Alexandria-Festival-1.jpg

The administration of Egypt’s Alexandria Festival of Francophone Cinema, headed by veteran artist Samir Sabry, has announced that this year’s festival will take place from June 18 to 23.

It is expected that more than 45 films will participate in the programme, most of which are joint productions between Francophone countries.

Festival Director Mohamed Atef said: “Alexandria Festival for Francophone Cinema is honoured to receive Tunisia as a guest of honour during the activities of the first session, as we see this as the best beginning for the festival’s launch. Tunisian cinema has become one of the most successful Arab cinemas in international film forums, and is making tremendous and inspiring global leaps for filmmakers in various countries of the South, not only in the Arab region. They also occupy an advanced position in the field of co-production.”

Alexandria Festival of Francophone Cinema appreciates the directives of Egypt’s Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem, who gave the green light to celebrate the Egyptian-Tunisian Year of Culture by preparing an agenda of activities.

The administration at the festival is currently coordinating with the concerned authorities in Egypt and Tunisia, so that the celebration will highlight the ancient artistic and cinematic legacy of both countries.

He added: “The Alexandria Festival of Francophone Cinema seeks to consolidate its relationship with the Alexandrian audience, hence the festival management is keen to show the festival’s films in a number of commercial theatres in various regions of Alexandria. It also aims to hold its activities within the artistic and cultural radiation platforms, such as the Freedom Center for Creativity and the French Cultural Center.”

The film festival is organised by the Arts Foundation for Culture and Media, and the Supreme Committee of the Festival, headed by writer Mohamed Salmawy. It includes a number of prominent media, artistic, and cultural personalities including veteran artist Samir Sabry, President of the Festival; Eman Negm, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Culture; and journalists Sana Mansour and Salma Al-Shamaa.

pay-subs-2021-chart-1.jpg

The global pay-TV industry is on track to add 15m more subscribers between 2020 and 2026 to take the global total to 1.02bn although the market is set to show steady losses in key areas, according to a study by Digital TV Research.

According to the study, 92 countries will add pay-TV subscribers while 46 countries will lose subscribers within the same year. Of the 46 countries that are estimated to suffer a net loss over that period, the US is expected to take the biggest hit.

The report forecasts that IPTV will add 63m subscribers between 2020 and 2026 to take its total to 378m. There will be 412m cable TV subscribers (both analogue and digital) by 2026, 46m lower than the 458m recorded in 2020. Satellite TV will lose 8m subscribers to a total of 203m. Pay DTT will grow by 6m subscribers to reach 25m, with many of its subscribers being in Africa.

Commenting on the findings of the report, Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “China and India will together continue to provide just under half the world’s pay-TV subscribers. China will lose 10m subscribers between 2020 and 2026 as OTT platforms are more appealing than traditional pay-TV. However, India will add 21m pay-TV subscribers. The US will be the biggest loser – down by 16m subscribers”.

Cedars Art Production, known for their Arabic series, have recently witnessed consistent viewership hikes on six of their drama series released earlier this month. The 30-episode titles, made for the region’s peak TV season, boast stories from Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and Syria.

While some of the titles are already taken up exclusively by platforms such as Shahid, four of the high-performing series have been reserved for the international content markets.

Sadek Sabbah, Chairman of Cedars Art Production, said: “Our country might be very small, and despite the current severe economic, political and social crisis, our projects remain really big, demand for our stories continue to grow from across the world. Our international clients were mainly from Latin America, but now we’re witnessing demand from networks in North America, Europe, and Africa. I’m proud that our stories are relevant to a wide audience and are easily localised.”

Every year more than half of Cedars Art new releases are acquired by international broadcasters and streaming platforms. Broadcast and streaming rights of the three Arabic drama titled 2020Al Hayba (season 4) and The Blue Eye are currently available for international licensing among other new titles.
