Ninetnine, a content provider to Cable and OTT platforms, has announced that this Ramadan it has brought the sitcom series Inchallah Mabrouk, to French VOD platforms via Le Bouquet Maghreb. Initially broadcasting on the Tunisian channel, the TV show is now available on-demand on Free Telecom and Bouygues Telecom IPTV platforms.

The 20-episode series, directed by Bassem Hamraoui, stars many Arab comedians including Naima El Jani, Khaled Bouzid, Samira Magroun, Majid Belghith and many others in a story that tackles important social issues through humour. The story follows a man who sells the same house to three different people: a smuggler, a policeman and a lawyer. The three families spent all their savings on the purchase and will be forced to cohabit altogether. This context creates an extremely funny narrative.

We are glad that a leading distributor like Ninetnine finds our content relevant for their audiences in Europe. FCC-2.jpg

The Federal Communications Commission has approved a modification of SpaceX’s license for its Starlink constellation, allowing the company to operate more than 2,800 additional satellites in lower orbits.

In order and authorization, the FCC wrote: “We conclude that grant of the SpaceX Third Modification Application will serve the public interest. Our action will allow SpaceX to implement safety-focused changes to the deployment of its satellite constellation to deliver broadband service throughout the United States, including to those who live in areas underserved or unserved by terrestrial systems.”

SpaceX filed the modification request a year ago. The company requested that, after its first 1,584 satellites are in orbit, it change the next 2,814 satellites to an altitude of under 570 km from its previous plan of an altitude above 1,100 km. The FCC’s approval comes at a key moment for SpaceX, as the company has nearly 1,400 satellites in orbit and likely would have had to halt its rapid launch campaign without the FCC’s authorization.

SpaceX’s proposal was the subject of intense debate at the FCC, with nearly 200 filings submitted. Many satellite operators opposed the modification on grounds ranging from increased electromagnetic interference to a greater risk of satellite collisions and the creation of orbital debris.

SpaceX’s competitors also argued the change was too significant for the FCC to treat it as a simple modification, saying it should instead be included in a broader processing round with new satellite systems.

The FCC, by and large, rejected those claims. “Based on our review, we agree with SpaceX that the modification will improve the experience for users of the SpaceX service, including in often-underserved polar regions,” the order states. “We conclude that operations at the lower altitude will have beneficial effects with respect to orbital debris mitigation. We also find that SpaceX’s modification will not present significant interference problems, as assessed under Commission precedent.”

In particular, it concluded that allowing SpaceX to operate more satellites in that lower orbit would not, in the aggregate, harm the orbital environment. Some companies, such as Viasat, had argued that Starlink satellites suffered a high failure rate that threatened to increase the risk of collisions in LEO.

The order requires SpaceX to operate its Starlink satellites at altitudes no higher than 580 kilometres. That was a condition requested by Amazon to avoid close approaches to its Project Kuiper satellites, and one SpaceX had stated in filings that it would accept.

“We further conclude that this modification does not create significant interference problems that would warrant treatment of SpaceX’s system as if it were filed in a later processing round,” the FCC wrote.

The FCC’s order requires that SpaceX issue a report twice a year that includes the number of Starlink conjunction events – meaning near misses with other satellites – in the past six months, as well as the number of Starlink satellites that were disposed of or re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

Netflix has joined Japan’s booming virtual Youtuber – or VTuber – scene with the launch of an animated character to promote its growing anime streaming offering.

Netflix Anime has officially announced VTuber N-Ko as its ambassador. N-ko, a “sheep-human lifeform”, is Netflix’s attempt to tap into the appeal of VTubers – characters animated by motion capture that have built a loyal audience on YouTube in Japan by singing, dancing and interacting with fans.

The animated character is set to have her own show on YouTube where she will discuss her favourite anime shows on Netflix and have a karaoke session from popular anime series and movies available on the streaming platform. The N-Ko show will be premiering globally on the official Netflix Anime YouTube channel on April 30.

Netflix and other streaming services hungry for content are turning to anime to secure local subscribers and exploit the global market for such shows that is seen by many in the industry as under commercialized.

Japanese anime and Korean drama “play really well around the region as well as in-country and occasionally could be very, very global in their interest and desire”, Netflix Co-CEO Theodore Sarandos said on an earnings call last week.

Axian Group plans to invest $500m in Tanzania following the purchase of telecommunication assets in the East African country and is seeking more deals to further expand in the region.

A consortium led by the Antananarivo, Madagascar-based conglomerate announced on April 19 the purchase of Millicom International Cellular’s Tanzanian operations. Acquiring Tigo Tanzania and Zanzibar Telecom means Axian now controls one of the largest telecommunication operations in the country.

Axian’s investment would be the largest in Tanzania’s telecommunication sector in more than five years, since the government in 2014 announced Vietnam-based Viettel Group’s plan to spend $1bn on developing infrastructure in the country.

Hassanein Hiridjee, Chief Executive Officer of Axian Group, said: “We will increase our coverage, we will increase the level of our services, we are bringing new technology. We do think that we have to embed in the asset much more infrastructure.”

oneweb-and-Eutelsat-2.jpg

Eutelsat Communications has entered into an agreement with OneWeb for the subscription of a c.24% equity stake, becoming a leading shareholder of the company alongside the UK Government and Bharti Global. Eutelsat will invest $550m in OneWeb, with closing expected in Q2 2021 subject to regulatory authorisations.

With much of its global network already deployed, the OneWeb constellation will operate 648 satellites in low orbit (LEO) offering low latency. This first generation of satellites will offer regional coverage by the end of 2021, reaching global coverage the following year. It will deliver 1.1 Tbps of capacity addressing the government, fixed data and mobility markets. Plans include a second-generation constellation that will provide enhancements in terms of capacity, flexibility and economics. It anticipates annual revenues of circa $1bn within three to five years following the full deployment of the constellation, with a partnership approach and profitable wholesale business model.

Eutelsat’s investment will come with similar governance rights to the UK Government and Bharti, including board representation, where its position and expertise will help to drive the success of the new constellation.

The investment will be 100% cash financed through Eutelsat’s liquidity position of $1.9bn as of end-March 2021 and the $507m US C-Band auction proceeds, and will be accounted for under the equity method.

Commenting on the agreement, Rodolphe Belmer, Eutelsat’s Chief Executive Officer said: “We are excited to become a shareholder and partner in OneWeb in the run-up to its commercial launch and to participate in the substantial opportunity represented by the non-geostationary segment within our industry. We are confident in OneWeb’s right to win thanks to its earliness to market, priority spectrum rights and evolving, scalable technology. We look forward to working alongside the UK Government, Bharti and the other shareholders to open new opportunities and market access to ensure OneWeb maximises its potential. OneWeb will become our main growth engine outside our broadcast and broadband applications, as we continue to maximise cash-flow extraction from our highly profitable heritage business and grow our fixed broadband vertical leveraging our geostationary assets.”

Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, added: “Today’s investment is another giant leap forward for OneWeb in realising its ambition to provide global broadband connectivity around the globe. Eutelsat brings over forty years of experience in the global satellite industry and this exciting new partnership puts OneWeb on a strong commercial footing, and the UK at the forefront of the latest developments in low Earth orbit technology. This comes alongside yesterday’s exciting news that a further 36 satellites were launched into space and demonstrates the momentum behind OneWeb and the promising efforts to provide connectivity to some of the world’s most remote places.”

OneWeb Executive Chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Eutelsat into the OneWeb family. As an open multi-national business, we are committed to serving the global needs of Governments, Businesses and Communities across the Globe. Together we are stronger, benefiting from the entrepreneurial energy of Bharti, the extensive global outreach of the UK and long-term expertise of the satellite industry at Eutelsat. OneWeb, with its innovatory approach, is poised to take a leading position in LEO broadband connectivity”.

Neil Masterson, Chief Executive Officer of OneWeb, stated: “As OneWeb accelerates the deployment of its fleet and engages in discussions with potential customers, we welcome the powerful support of Eutelsat during the next exciting phase of our journey together, benefitting both companies equally. Eutelsat is a great partner for OneWeb thanks to our high level of complementarity in terms of technology, assets, addressable markets, geographic reach and institutional relationships”.
