Robe-T2-Profile-1.jpg

Robe Lighting s.r.o. has launched its new T2 Profile luminaire, which offers an array of technologies and the colour finesse of Robe’s Multi-Spectral LED (MSL) light engines.

Crafted for multiple applications – theatre, television, auditoriums, stages, concert environments, etc. – the T2 Profile produces over 17,500 lumens – measured at the front lens – via its 850W MSL source, to throw high-quality light over long distances.

The fixture is suitable for scenarios where noise is crucial including classical concerts or recitals and dramas – where you could still hear the pin drop with a full rig of T2s!

It can also be used in conjunction with Robe’s smaller T1 series fixtures, as both features the MSL LED engines and therefore produce an identical multi-spectral colour mixing consistency.

The T2 Profile incorporates technologies like adjustable CCT – from 2,700K to 8,000K – together with DataSwatch for the quick selection of 237 authentic pre-programmed colours and tones including the most frequently used whites.

A high CRI of 95+ gives clear skin tones, while Robe’s L3 – Low Light Linearity – and 18-bit dimming enable fades-to-black. EMS stabilisation keeps the fixture steady whatever is happening around it, and the Cpulse flicker-free management is essential when working with cameras and vision systems.

Other features include the RCC (Robe Colour Calibration) system which allows self-calibration of the LED engine without using any external tools.

AirLOC (Less Optical Cleaning) reduces the levels of airborne particles across the optical elements, boosting the overall performance and light quality of the fixture, and it also reduces the time needed for routine cleaning and maintenance.

The T2 Profile has been engineered by Robe to include all the functionality that lighting designers and professionals are demanding with features like fast, easy CMY colour control; a separate +/- green hue control channel; 5°– 55° zoom; variable 1° and 5° interchangeable frosts with full zoom range capability; two gobo wheels – one static and one rotating; an animation wheel; two rotating prisms and precise four individual plane framing shutter system.

The subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) sector has been a key driver for consumer spending on video in the Asia Pacific market growing 9% year-on-year in 2020 leading aggregate revenues to reach US$58.3bn, according to new analysis and research released by Media Partners Asia.

The analysis shows that growth in 2020 and the future will be led by the fast-expanding online SVOD sector where consumer spending revenue is forecast to grow at 15% CAGR over 2020-25 to reach US$31.6bn by 2025. This represents a 40% market share. By contrast, the consumer spends on pay-TV is set to grow at 2% CAGR to reach US$47.8bn, representing 60% market share. Total consumer spending revenue is projected to rise 6% CAGR to US$79.3bn by 2025.

The research found that during 2020, all markets grew spending on SVOD services with strong activity in peak pandemic periods during the first half of 2020 and robust spending in the second half of 2020 due to new launches from major players.

The MPA study also found that China remained the largest market in Asia Pacific for consumer spending on video with US$27.6bn in revenue, led by SVOD and IPTV services. Japan was second with US$9.2bn with SVOD representing more than a third of consumer spend while India was third with US$6.5bn with pay-TV contributing having greater than 90% market share. Korea with US$5.7bn in revenue in 2020 and Australia with US$2.9bn in 2020 remain formidable markets; Malaysia led Southeast Asia with US$962m in revenue with pay-TV contributing more than 90% market share.

Commenting on the finding, Vivek Couto, Executive Director of MPA, said: “Consumer spending on entertainment and sports through video platforms was robust in 2020 due to growth of SVOD in a peak pandemic year along with new competition and consumer choice in many Asian markets. While SVOD growth will decelerate in 2021, we see a bright future for the SVOD sector and the stacking of various services across sports, entertainment and deeply integrated local services. China, Japan, India and Korea will lead the way while we see the market for SVOD slowly deepening in key markets across Southeast Asia, led by Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. Pay-TV will remain vital in Korea (led by IPTV), India, Malaysia and the Philippines.”

Terry-1.jpg

Middle East-based production company Yalla Yalla, founded by Front Row Filmed Entertainment and Rocket Science has brought together Oscar-winning writer/director Terry George and acclaimed Egyptian writer Mariam Naoum to co-write the serial killer series The Alexandria Killings

Set in 1920 when Egypt was under British rule, the series will chronicle the true story of Egyptian sisters Raya and Sakina. The sisters came from a poor Alexandria neighbourhood and rose from poverty to run a glamorous brothel operation, drawing on a powerful and influential circle of Egyptian and British officers, informants, and statesmen. At its heights, the Hammams’ operation became a hive of secrets, intelligence sharing, and criminal conspiracies among the top echelons of the Alexandria underworld. The rise and fall of their empire found the sisters relying more and more on petty theft, leading to the murder of 17 women in crimes of opportunity. The sisters were eventually put on trial and became the first women to be sentenced to death, causing a massive social outcry. Public perception of the women varied from cold-blooded criminal masterminds to victims.

The show will form the first part of a MENA-based true crime anthology series set in various periods and locations within the Arab world.

The series will be shot predominantly in Arabic with English to reflect British rule, exploring the complexities of life on the fringes of a male-dominated society. George’s previous works scrutinizes Colonial rule in its’ various forms, whilst Naoum has profound knowledge of the patriarchal Arab society and the struggle of women within the system, allowing for a unique common vision for the show.

Commenting on the collaboration, Terry George, said: “I look forward to collaborating with a truly international team of talented producers and storytellers to investigate the remarkable true story of the Hammam sisters. I am particularly delighted to be working with renowned Egyptian writer Mariam Naoum to tackle subject matter that while containing all the captivating elements of a legendary crime also encompasses global themes of sexism, jealousy, greed and lost love. This will be a thrilling and entertaining journey.”

Co-writer Mariam Naoum added: “I’m very enthusiastic about being a part of this project, and I feel lucky to be working with Terry George and Front Row. At this point of my career, I really believe that merging the experiences of the middle eastern and western filmmakers is crucial for the industry of filmmaking and it will help perfect the adaptation of the story. And I’m sure that I’ll also be learning a lot during this journey.”

Front Row & Yalla Yalla CEO Gianluca Chakra stated: “We are really proud and excited to be working with amazing talent like Terry and Mariam. We see Terry and Mariam forming a strong synergy with their experiences tackling these complex and interesting subject matters; Terry’s impactful, Award-winning work in landmark Award-winning productions and Mariam’s powerful resume in Arabic film and TV are a perfect match for The Alexandria Killings. The societal exploration underpinning the murders is unique in that the world has not seen anything of this scale from the Arab world. We’re really looking forward to it.”

The Alexandria Killings will be executive produced by Hisham AlGhanim, Michela Scolari, who is represented by Larry Hummel and Nayla Al Khaja, who is represented by Adel Nur.

Terry George’s previous works include the Oscar-nominated Hotel Rwanda and In The Name of The Father. Mariam Naoum’s Between Two Seas’ and One-Zero were critically acclaimed projects for film and TV. Naoum’s endeavours to change the conditions by which women are perceived in her native Egypt are a key driving factor throughout her career along with her various social activism campaigns, earning her recognition by UN Women Egypt on International Women’s Day in 2016.

O3b-mPOWER-2.jpg

SES and the Kazakhstan Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore service agreements for satellite-enabled, high-speed connectivity services using SES’s O3b mPOWER communications system in Kazakhstan to accelerate the Digital Kazakhstan project.

The MoU was issued by Kazakhstan’s Republican Center for Space Communications (RCSC), a subsidiary of the nation’s Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry.

Under this memorandum of understanding, RCSC will explore utilising SES’s next-generation, low-latency constellation scheduled to launch in Q3 2021. Located at 8,000km away from the Earth’s surface in a medium earth orbit (MEO), the fully-funded O3b mPOWER system will provide global coverage with as few as six satellites, and will ramp capacity with its current plan of 11 satellites. The system is capable of delivering dedicated services at multiple gigabits per second with unprecedented flexibility and resiliency, ensuring constant, efficient usage of bandwidth.

The parties will also explore creating an in-country gateway for O3b mPOWER. SES has committed to knowledge transfer programmes to advance the digital transformation process of enterprise and government sectors in Kazakhstan. SES has also established a local presence in Kazakhstan as of last year and will be making a direct in-country investment.

O3b mPOWER is built upon the success of SES’s current generation of O3b system which has been operational since 2014. SES has also conducted a demo on the current O3b constellation in Saryagash in central Kazakhstan where it provided 730 megabits per second to a local mobile tower, enabling the delivery of carrier-grade low-latency Wi-Fi services in the region.

In addition, RCSC and SES will also look into using O3b mPOWER services for other Central Asian countries with ubiquitous broadband access to the Internet.

Commenting on the agreement, Malik Zhuiriktayev, Chairman of the Board of JSC “RCSC”, said: “Today, the market for satellite communications services is highly competitive as the needs of operators and end-users grow on a daily basis. An increase in channel throughput and high-quality requirements calls for an introduction of new services, and we cannot disregard the opportunities that new satellite technologies will deliver. Therefore, we are looking into international cooperation using next-generation global high-speed, low-latency non-geostationary satellites (NGSO) systems.”

JP Hemingway, CEO of SES Networks, added: “In the digital era, high-speed connectivity and reliable network access is of utmost importance to empower business and communities – especially remote ones. At SES, we take pride in leveraging our unparalleled reach and proven technology to contribute to the digital transformation of Kazakhstan through cloud-enabled satellite communications. We are pleased to support RCSC with our services and proven NGSO experience as they continue to innovate and expand their data services in Kazakhstan, and we look forward to more collaborations with other companies in the country.”

Facebook has announced it will roll out a series of audio features in the next few months.

This includes Live Audio Rooms, its version of the Clubhouse app, which will enable people to start up audio rooms that their connections can join. This will be highlighted at the top of News Feeds and chats within each app.

The new option will have a Clubhouse-like format, with hosts highlighted at the top of the screen, and listeners tuning in shown below. Users will be able to make their rooms public or private, while they’ll also be discoverable in a separate Rooms tab.

Creators will also be able to monetise their Rooms, via Facebook’s Stars donation system, while it’s also working on additional monetization models, “like the ability to charge for access to a Live Audio Room through a single purchase or a subscription”.

In addition to this, Facebook says that creators will also be able to turn a live conversation into a podcast for everyone to listen to later, providing more ways to use the content.

Facebook will also launch a new feature, Soundbites, where users can create and share short audio clips.

The feature will be launched over the next few months, at first with a small number of creators.

Facebook rooms will also initially be made available to public figures, with a broader rollout coming in the summer.

In addition to this, Facebook is also launching a new tool called ‘Soundbites’, which will enable users to create short-form audio clips using a range of effects and tools.

The new tool will showcase Facebook’s various advances in audio tech – as explained by Facebook’s Fidji Simo in a blog post: “Through our advances in AI, we can make audio quality magically great – even if you record on a busy street corner. You will be able to use music from Facebook’s Sound Collection in the background of your story to set the tone. And with the ability to mix audio tracks, a growing collection of sound effects, voice effects and filters, it should be a lot of fun too.”

The option will eventually enable users to post their own audio clips to Facebook, in a whole new format.

Simo added: “Audio seamlessly fits within our busy lives, allows us to be inspired by new ideas, and talk with other like-minded people without pressure.”

Facebook says it will start testing Soundbites over the next few months.

Users will be able to make money in the Live Audio Rooms or with Soundbites, though it’s unclear if this will be available to anyone or just reserved for creators with large followings.

Facebook’s also looking to tap into podcasts more specifically, with the launch of new podcast listening and discovery tools in the app.

As explained in the blog post: “Within the next few months, you’ll be able to listen to podcasts directly on the Facebook app – both while using the app or when the app is backgrounded. And because it’s still hard to discover podcasts you like, we will help you easily find new podcasts and episodes based on your interests, comment on them and recommend them to your friends.”

And podcast creators will be able to reach and connect with new listeners — all directly within the Facebook app.
